The film was originally released in June 2019 in Japan, and received limited theatrical releases in other regions in late 2019. A sequel film, Rascal Does Not Dream of a Sister Vturing Out, was released in 2023.
In Fujisawa, Sakuta Azusagawa is in his second year of high school. He greatly joys his days with Mai Sakurajima, who for the past 6 months has be both his girlfrid and sior. However, their peaceful lives are interrupted by the appearance of Sakuta's first love, Shoko Makinohara. While taking his younger sister to the hospital, Sakuta discovers that there are two Shokos — the one in middle school and the older one who helped him in the past. Sakuta discovers that the middle school Shoko is suffering from a heart disease that urgtly requires heart transplantation to save her life. Wh both Sakuta and Mai become concerned about the middle school Shoko's situation and think of ways to help her, Sakuta evtually figures out the link betwe his wounds and adult Shoko. Adult Shoko comes from the future after a successful heart transplant, and her heart donor was Sakuta himself — who Shoko reveals was declared brain dead after a near-fatal traffic accidt on Christmas Eve. However, Shoko developed feelings for Sakuta through their interactions in her youth, so she decided to come back to the past and save his life. Against Mai's wishes, Sakuta decides to sacrifice himself so that Shoko can live. Sakuta nearly gets run over, but Mai pushes him aside at the last momt and gets hit by the car instead. As a result, the tire chain of causality changes — Sakuta lives, but Mai is killed and becomes Shoko's heart donor instead.
Sakuta is in shock and devastated after Mai's death. Unable to bear seeing him like this, adult Shoko helps him one last time by telling him a secret: with her help, he can also return to the past to rewrite history, the ultimate implication being that the adult Shoko disappears forever. Sakuta makes a firm decision and returns to the past to save his love. Sakuta stops Mai from sacrificing herself and prevts himself from being run over, but now Shoko does not have a heart transplant from anyone and her illness remains uncured. However, Sakuta refuses to accept such an outcome and together with Mai, they agree to find a way to help the dying young Shoko, knowing that saving her means risking the loss of everything that has happed up to th. Nevertheless, the couple vow to find each other and fall in love all over again. Sakuta visits young Shoko one last time, where she reveals that she now knows everything that has happed. She decides to create a future in which she never meets Sakuta or Mai, thus saving them from the sadness of the situation. Time winds back to wh Shoko was in fourth grade. She bravely writes down her future hopes, giving up the memory of meeting Sakuta and Mai and the likelihood of meeting them at all. In the d, time returns to New Year's in the prest day. Mai has starred in a film based on Shoko's story, ev though she does not remember her, which was a success. Sakuta and Mai visit a shrine and pass by a beach, where for the first time they counter Shoko, now a healthy young girl. Thanks to memory pieces crossing differt timelines, Sakuta and Shoko evtually recognize each other.

, however, was exactly the kind of movie I probably should have researched before watching in cinemas. Apparently, it is a movie sequel to a 2018 anime called
I had nothing but negative comments scribbled into my phone. The pacing seemed odd. The transitions were painfully abrupt. It seemed like I had just been thrown headfirst into the story. The characters kept mentioning an unexplained phenomenon that they called “Puberty Syndrome”, which sounded pretty stupid at first. The character design seemed pretty flat, and the backgrounds were uninspired. The main focus seemed to be a strange love triangle between the protagonist, his girlfriend, and a college-version of a middle-school child that had a crush on the protagonist. Did that last sentence confuse you? Good, welcome to my experience.
To be honest, the story was fine, but the way the story was executed was so blasé. I was pretty upset that the earlier part of the movie focused more on telling me the story, instead of actually showing the characters going through their emotions. Hell, there was even one dramatic scene that I just hated for its boring cinematography. I mean, how the fuck do you make a young girl having a heart attack a boring scene?

But at least that’s when the movie finally hit its stride and kicked into high gear. Suddenly, it had vision and purpose. It placed the protagonist in a life-or-death situation and forced the audience to evaluate the best course of action with him: if you had the chance to save someone’s life with your own death, would you do it?
The main themes of this film are love, sacrifice, and the power of the mind. First, to be clear, this film does not only focus on romantic love, but also on the charitable aspect of love and the love between friends. The protagonist, Sakuta, has a girlfriend, Mai. Second, sacrifice is a clear motif. Sakuta is willing to die for Shouko to live. But as a twist, Mai decides to save Sakuta and she dies in his stead. But Sakuta manages to rewind time, because college-version Shouko relinquishes her chance for getting the transplant that saves her life. Then at the end of it all, Sakuta and Mai work together and rewind one last time in order to give Shoko a small chance to survive her illness, even if it means that they will forget each other in the present.
What exactly gives all these characters the godlike power to transcend time? The human mind. Entire timelines are shifted because the characters DECIDE to accept realities as true or false. Normally, I’d call BULLSHIT
