Our water quality monitoring program has shown the Hawkesbury River estuary to have fair water quality. Find out more about the estuary and its unique features.
The Hawkesbury River estuary marks the northern boundary of the Greater Sydney Metropolitan regionand the southern boundary of the Central Coast region of New South Wales. The estuary is a large drowned valley that drains the second largest coastal catchment in the state and enters the ocean via Broken Bay and Pittwater.

The significance of the Hawkesbury River cannot be understated. The catchment supports large agricultural and tourism industries to name just two. Many of its major tributaries are regulated and provide drinking water for millions of people. It hosts myriad recreational activities for residents of the local government areas it encompasses as well as visitors to the Greater Sydney region. It has a rich colonial history, and a significant traditional history.
Hawkesbury River & Pittwater Fishing Map #29
As part of our water quality monitoring program we assess the water quality and ecosystem health of an estuary using a range of relevant indicators. We sample a subset of the estuaries located between Taree and Wollongong every 3 years. The most recent sampling in the Hawkesbury River was completed over the 2019–20 summer when 2 sites.
This report card represents 2 water quality indicators that we routinely measure: the amount of algae present and water clarity. Low levels of these 2 indicators equate with good water quality.
We also sample a number of inflowing tributaries of the lower Hawkesbury River, including Mooney Mooney Creek, Patonga Creek and Mullet Creek as part of a collaborative program with Central Coast Council. The most recent sampling was completed over the 2019–2020 summer.

The results of the monitoring program, including a detailed water quality report card for the inflowing tributaries, are available on the Central Coast Council website.

We have monitored water quality in the Hawkesbury River since 2010. This table shows the water quality grades for this estuary over that time.

Local councils manage estuaries within their area unless the estuary is attached to a marine park. The Hawkesbury and Nepean Rivers flow through a number of local government areas. Our trip involved two different fishing spots . The first was up in the mountains fishing in a 10 acre lake surrounded by huge mountain cliffs . You could not get a better setting . Accommodation was great , as was the service . The anticipation of the fish , 60 different species and the biggest was about 150 kgs .
Day one the three of us had 8 rods out at the same time , some with small dead fish , some with chicken , some with live bait , some with a bread ball . Each bait was for different species . We fished from 8.30 am till 7 pm and there was a lot of hours of nothing happening .
So the end of the first day we caught only 5 fish , one 20 kg red tail catfish , one albino pacu , one razor cat fish , a smaller red tail catfish , and Jonathan caught a nice size aligator gar . See the photo for the teeth . Not great for the time we spent , but hopefully tomorrow is better .
Livelihoods Disappear In Sydney Flooding
Day two my goal was a big arapaima , and one of the others wanted a Chau Peraya , the fastest swimming fresh water fish , that fight like a kingie . I had the first luck at 9 am with a 20 kg Asian red tail catfish . A great fight , caught on bread ball . Then there was nothing until 1 pm when Jonathan caught his Chau peraya catfish . However it was only about 18 kg but it gave him a hell of a fight . We were finishing at 4 pm to leave for the town and time was running out . Then at 3 pm the arapaima hit the rod with the live bait and I was on. It took 10 or so minutes to get it in and see the photo . A great 80 kg arapaima , a prize , but they said there are bigger ones in the lake , twice the size . Anyway this saved the day for me.
The next day we were out ocean fishing with micro jigs and soft plastics . All I can tell you is that there are no fish left in the oceans around Thailand . All commercially fished out . We caught 3 small fish all day , and they take you to the fishing grounds 2 hours away .

If you are going fishing in Thailand , stick to the stocked lakes as they are much more fun and more reliable .

Fihsing in Pittwater is hot at the moment . Bream and small snapper are being caught everywhere , Flathead are on the chew , bonito and tailor are in schools , they seem to find you , even some mackerel . Small soapy jewies are about amongst the moorings but you have to fish the tides .
For all the locations of where to fish for your preferred species in Pittwater , see my past blogs . They will tell you the gear and where to find them .
For my fishing this weekend , I caught 3 jewies , 4 Flathead , one big tailor , one eel , one flounder . I wasn’t on the water much but more time would have caught a lot more . I was targeting jewies and all the rest were by catches. As usual , all were released except one Flathead .

Fishing in Pittwater this weekend has been terrific . It should keep going so get out there next weekend . Flathead , bream , bonito , tailor , jewfish , kingie said are all there for the taking .
On Saturday I set off early to target jewfish in Pittwater .Rising tide to high at 10.40 am . The moon is right . Nothing from 6.30 -8.30 then two jewies by 9 am . Very happy when the plan comes off . I then moved to another spot amongst the moorings , and at 9.3o till 10.00 another two jewies . I left them still biting as I had to go in . I used Flathead gear, 5″ soft plastic jerk shad in white , 1/4 oz jig head and 3/0 hook .the secret is to fish light so 10 lb leader , 2500 reel .All you have to do is find a deep spot amongst the moorings and be patient . Let the jig head hit the bottom and then just jig it up and down aggressively , letting it hit the bottom each time . They will hit it on the drop mostly and also when it is on the bottom , never on the up , so be ready .

Sunday I went after the jewies again . Same deal as yesterday . This time I had 3 jewies in the boat between 6.30 and 7.00 am . One hour after the low tide time . Then nothing for half an hour so I moved to another spot . Then 8.00am another jewie , and then nothing .
I decided then to go up the Hawkesbury to try my luck . Nothing from 10.30 till 1.00 pm . Then a hit , an nice 61 cm jewie . That made 5 for the day and 9 for the weekend . Add to this two Flathead , one tailor and one eel as by catch and a good day . The gear up the Hawkesbury is bigger , 17-20 lb leader , but still 2500 reel and 10 lb braid . Use the same system as I have described above .
