Surplus Zoo Animals For Sale Uk

After over 15 years of building up Animalarium into a popular zoo near Borth, Jean and Alan Mumbray are looking forward to retirement, so the site and their home is on the market.

So what animals would you be taking on and what will you be letting yourself in for if you make them an offer?

Lot

The range of over 300 animals that Jean and Alan Mumbray have received and now call Animalarium their home is impressive and varied.

The Captive Animals Debate

Our feathered friends are also represented by a range of parrots, cockatiels, parakeets and an Emu family, to name but a few.

If visitors feel brave and request in advance, they can even get up close and personal, as the zoo offers a 'Reptile Encounter' - and if you own the zoo, you could have an encounter like this every day!

The snakes they use for this are usually small corn snakes, a royal python and a large Burmese python because these species are known for their gentle and placid temperament.

Things We Need To Stop Telling Ourselves About Animals In Zoos

If you own the zoo, you will also own lizards, a caiman and a nile crocodile and many insect species. There are turtles and tortoises too.

Jean has great affection for all her animals, but her favourite is her monkey Roley. She says: he was my personal pet at the farm before I bought the zoo. We kept him in the house when he was young and later he had an outdoor enclosure but would still come in through the kitchen window.

Jean says the new owners of Animalarium need to have a passion for animals but also the resources to develop what is already a successful visitor attraction and has huge potential to expand.

People with previous zoo experience are quite a niche buyer to be targeting, but maybe you don't need to come from this background to consider the property and business?

She says: Anyone interested in the sale need to have some experience of keeping exotic animals, but not necessarily from a zoo background as the staff are all experienced.

Don't panic, you don't suddenly have to find your inner Dr Dolittle and get in with the big cats at feeding time on your first day.

Top Ten Problems With Zoos — Plant Based Bride

The new owners will not be alone in running the zoo. Jean says: The staff are invaluable. The zoo keepers will do the actual feeding and daily care, the owners will learn as they go, depending on their past zoo keeper expertise.

The typical day at the zoo for Jean includes all the administration, ordering supplies, inspecting work and sorting out any problems when she regularly meets up with the zoo keepers.

Alan does a variety of essential maintenance and security roles such as locking up, but he also is involved with providing customers with a great experience.

Jean says: Alan gives a reptile demonstration once or twice a day, feeds the caiman and the horses, give pony rides in summer, feed snakes in the evening.

Oh, and he mucks out the stables and the paddocks; you certainly need to be willing to literally muck-in to run a zoo.

According to Jean, the most dangerous animals at the site are probably the rats because they will bite any fingers that are put through their wire.

Welcome To Exotic Zoo

Many animals here would be dangerous if keepers went in with them. Most injuries by dangerous animals in zoos are caused by keepers failing to keep to the protocols and finding themselves accidentally in with a dangerous animal.

Of all the animals that visitors to the zoo can see, the monkeys are very enteraining. Jean says: They react to visitors, grimacing, trying to communicate and reaching out to grab anything available.

They are very intelligent and active and require stimulus, so food puzzles have to be devised to occupy their time or they become bored.

Zoos And Animal Welfare (issues That Concern You)

Jean says: there are a lot of lions being born in captivity, so there is a surplus (for zoos). Our male has 'been done' so that we do not add to this problem.

The zoo has taken on animals that have been surplus at other UK zoos and are cared for in modern accommodation and enclosures. But not every animal that is offered can be accepted; sometimes it's not possible to re-home them at Animalarium.

The most recent animal arrivals that visitors can enjoy are 32 baby Bearded dragons, which were left at the zoo before Christmas.

The attraction features a reptile house with snakes and lizards, a crocodile house, a petting barn, a wild cat enclosure and monkeys and meerkats enclosures, among many others.

Oh, and there's a property for the new owners too - a two bedroom bungalow with hill and sea views and full planning permission to expand to a 4 bedroom property.

Running a zoo is hard work but very rewarding. Jean says: The practical problems are a cross between running a boarding school and a prison. The problems are real and sometimes harsh.

Zoos Cause Animals Far More Harm Than Good

After many years of hard work, Jean and Alan feel it's time to retire. Jean says: When we sell we intend to buy a property nearer to family and with a couple of acres as we intend to take some horses with us.

Animalarium, including the bungalow and approximately 12 acres of grounds and land is for sale for £600, 000 with Morris Marshall & Poole
