How To Draw Anime Eyes From The Side

Today we’re going to be going through some simple yet effective techniques to combat some of the most common mistakes made by students as they’re learning to draw anime style eyes.

First of all, it is important to understand what parts of the realistic human eye we use when drawing anime eyes. After all, even very exaggerated anime eyes are rooted in reality somewhere!

Firstly, we have the above style, where we use the entire outline of the eye and iris. You can see some rough examples of the kind of anime eyes we get by using this technique on the left.

Next, we have the following style, where we are using the top eyelid and eyelashes, the iris, and just the lashes from the bottom eyelid.

Finally, this most simplified style uses either just the outline of the eye, or just the iris. It might be hard to tell, but the top and bottom eye shapes here are in fact simplified representations of the upper and lower eyelid being squeezed together!

Now we’ve seen which parts of the eyes we use to draw eyes, let’s move on and look at some common mistakes often made by artists just starting out with the anime style.

This is a really common mistake made by anime artists when learning! Because we simplify the edge of the eye, it can be easy to forget what the original shape of the eye should be. Make sure you have it clear in your mind which part of the eyes are which, and how they should connect. Make sure they form a shape that means they would connect with each other in a natural shape if you followed the lines on, even when you’ve left out bits of the outlines.

Fail to follow this rule, and we end up with a portion that is neither eyeball or skin (marked in red here).

Make sure the shape of the iris and pupil are relatively rounded, and standing upright in the eye, rather than slanting off to one side.

Because of how large and rounded anime eyes sometimes look from the front, it can be easy to get confused when drawing from the side.

Make sure the eye connects in a realistic way at the corner, rather than just drawing two flat, parallel lines. The eye should form a half-almond shape when viewed from the side, to reflect the natural shape of the eye.

Also, be sure to flatten the iris of the eye out, so that we see the lens of the eye floating on the surface, rather than a big round sideways iris on the left. Looking at photos of real eyes will help you see how the eye is put together and understand this point more firmly.

Talking of the “lens” of the eye, remember the full shape of the eye ball when drawing. We are drawing only a small portion of the eye that’s visible through the open eyelids. Because of the shape of the eyeball, the surface of the eye when drawn from the side should form a slight curve. Use this shape for the most realistic results!

I hope these tips will be useful for you when drawing anime characters! The mistakes mentioned here are very common among anime artists, and can be hard to notice on your own. Now you know how to spot these mistakes, it’ll be really easy to fix them using the techniques I’ve shown you here!

Ways To Draw Simple Anime Eyes

Anime eyes are usually drawn much larger than real eyes in relation to the head and often tend to be vertically stretched. However they are still based on real eyes and understanding how real eyes and eyelids function can be helpful when drawing anime eyes.

Eyes are basically a sphere (3d circle). The eyes rotate upwards when looking up and downwards when looking down. The eyelids act as a sort of cover pulled around the eyes.

When the eyes close completely in a relaxes state (not squinting) the top eyelid actually moves all the way to the bottom eyelid while the bottom eyelid remains in place.

Drawing Realistic And Anime Style Eyes By Ecao

To place anime eyes on the head form the side view (or front view) simply divide the head in two vertically and draw the eyes below that line.

Real eyes are located directly on the halfway line. If you are drawing in a more realistic anime style you may consider moving the eyes further up.

Simple

For normal open anime eyes in the side view draw the top of the iris lightly covered by the top eyelid and draw the eyebrow in a natural state slightly above the eye.

For startled anime eyes from the side view draw the iris slightly smaller than normal. Draw the top eyelid raised so that it just barely touches the top of the iris. Draw the bottom eyelid below the iris. Draw the eyelids slightly raised.

The reason for making the iris smaller is that because as was already mentioned anime eyes are often vertically stretched making it hard to put enough distance between the eyes and the eyelids to give that startled look.

For embarrassed anime eyes from the side view draw the iris looking down with a large part of it covered by the bottom eyelid. Draw the top eyelid slightly lower than normal but not touching the iris. Draw the eyelids in an upside down (compared to natural state) curve.

How To Draw Anime Eyes Step By Step!

For determined anime eyes from the side view draw them slightly squinted and the eyebrows in a “wave” sort of shape lowering towards the direction in which the eyes are looking.

For tired anime eyes from the side view draw the eyes looking down. Draw the top eyelid about halfway down covering a large part of the eye. Draw the eyelids with a lighter curve than a normal expression.

Easy

For angry anime eyes from the side view draw the eyes squinted and draw the eyebrows lowering down towards the direction in which the eyes are looking. Draw the lowest part of the eyebrows so that it’s basically lined up with the top of the eyes.

How To Draw Female Anime Eyes

For upset anime eyes from the side view draw the eyes squinted and looking down. Draw the eyebrows in an upside down curve raised towards the direction in which the eyes are facing.

For scared anime eyes from the side view draw them wide open and draw the iris significantly smaller than normal. You want to leave a lot of space between the iris and the eyelids. As already mentioned it can be hard to leave enough space between the eyes and the eyelids when drawing anime eyes as the irises and pupils are often vertically stretched. For this reason you can draw the irises/pupils smaller for certain expressions.

For puzzled anime eyes from the side view draw them looking slightly upwards. Draw the top eyelids raised but still covering a significant portion of the iris. Draw the eyebrows slightly raised as well.

Easy Tips For Drawing Eyes

For relaxed closed anime eyes from the side view draw them as pretty much just the eyelashes. In this example it may appear like there is a lot of empty space between the eyebrows and the eyes but remember that it’s the top eyelid that lowers down so that blank space actually represents the eye covered by the eyelid.

For content anime eyes from the side view draw them completely closed. Unlike the closed eyes in their relaxed state though you will have the bottom eyelids slightly raised. The slightly raised bottom eyelids will also cause the eyelashes to be angled slightly upwards so draw accordingly. Draw the eyebrows raised as well.

It’s not too difficult to draw anime eyes from the side view as long as you are aware of how eyes behave in different states and expressions as well as some tricks specific to anime (such as drawing smaller irises/pupils for scared eyes for example).
