To make things interesting the club is joined by two diverse but talented new players: Kuroko, the phantom sixth member of the Generation of Miracles, and Kagami a talented player who spent middle school in America with a fierce love for the game.
Through the anime Kuroko & Kagami team up to take on the different members of the Generation of Miracles, not only on the court but on the Generation’s philosophy about the game, proving that winning without enjoying the game and building friendships is meaningless.
Igniting an interest in basketball and makes it easy to follow whats happening on the technical side of the game, sometimes oversimplifying if I might add.
All Sports Anime Releasing In 2023, Listed
Prince of Tennis, Slam Dunk and Eye Shield 21 have all been monuments in the anime scene, but I’ve always been of the view that anime should inspire imagination and adventure. If I’d want to experience a sport I’d rather play it than watch an anime about it, (Kinda how Sims makes people play “life” and not really live it), and as such I never really gave the genre a chance.
A couple of years ago Free! caught my eye mainly because of the quality of animation! After watching two seasons, its fair to say that I totally fell in love with the beautiful story and characters.
And they had this awesome Kuroko’s Basketball exhibit, (checkout the photos below) displaying the teams locker and the characters in life-size cut-outs. This experience together with my new interest in sports anime made me power through the slow stretches of the series.
Kuroko No Basuke
Something I must add is that although Kuroko’s Basketball is a shonen anime, it doesn’t follow the shonen recipe exactly. Our heroes doesn’t always have to suffer a devastating defeat before being able to grow, we see the growth in-game and this is a quality I recon captures the nature of sport perfectly and serves as a refreshing take on how shonen anime typically progress.
75 episodes at first seemed a lot, the first episodes are not amazing but after that the story, much like a basketball game blasts by before you know it, with the story progressing without much holding it back.
Although I wouldn’t slamdunk Kuroko’s Basketball in the “must watch” hoop, I would say that it’s not a disappointing watch if your fine with the slow start and 75 eps.

What Kuroko’s Basketball does is set the stage for a ton of new sports genre anime that seem to be popping up all over the place.
In conclusion, the first couple of episodes were slow and the animation of standard quality, but after a while the pace picks up and you find yourself on the edge of your seat rooting for Seirin High to obliterate their opponents! Should definitely be watched if you’re a fan of either basketball or sports anime.
My next sports genre anime will be Haikyu!! and with this I’d like to thank Free! and Kuroko’s Basketball for opening a whole new level of anime for me to enjoy!!
